Linking your publications to your ORCID ID using ADS

Most Solar Physics researchers now have ORCID IDs, and many journals allow you to link the ID to your papers. Using the Astrophysics Data System (ADS) you can search for an ORCID ID and you will receive a list of all publications associated with that ID. For authors with common surnames this is a particularly useful way of searching ADS.

However, most authors have not linked all of their publications to their ORCID IDs and so an ADS search using the ID will not return all of the author's publications.

Here I describe how to use ADS to link all of your publications to your ORCID ID.

Requirements

You will need:

  • An ORCID ID.
  • An ADS account.

Procedure

  • In your ADS account settings, select the ORCID link from the menu on the left-hand side. Follow the instructions to link your ORCID ID to your ADS account.
  • From your ADS account, create a new ADS library.
  • Search for your publications in ADS and add them to your library until it is complete.
  • Under your ADS account, access your new library.
  • Look for the link "-> View library in search results page" near the top of the page and click on it.
  • At the top of the ADS page, select the ORCID menu and turn on ORCID mode.
  • For each publication in the list you will now see a button asking if you want to claim the publication in ORCID (or the publication may already by claimed).
  • I recommend switching off ORCID mode once you are finished, as it slows down ADS.

It may take a day or two for the new publications to appear in your ORCID account.

Technical details

ADS has three parameters for storing ORCID IDs. These are orcid_pub, orcid_user and orcid_other. The first stores the ID assigned by the journal and the second stores the ID assigned by the user. I'm not sure what the third is for!
